After years of living with an addiction I refused to acknowledge or treat, I can finally say that I am sober, healthy, and grateful.
I am sober and you can be too.
Why do I share this? The answer is simple: it is my truth. I have chosen to share it because this truth is now a defining part of who I am.
As children, when we experience trauma and pain, it is natural to hold the adults around us responsible. But as we grow into adulthood, many of us continue the pattern of blaming others instead of looking inward. At some point, I realized that it was no longer anyone else’s fault that I continued to suffer. The trauma and pain followed me because I lacked the tools and understanding to change my life. It became clear that it was my responsibility to heal and improve the quality of my life.
Today, I recognize, understand, and nurture my past while embracing my future. Sobriety has given me the ability to live better and to do better.
I have founded my own nonprofit, Soberkern Inc., with the mission of sharing what sobriety is and what it truly means to live a sober life. Soberkern has become my lantern—my reminder of why sobriety is the best and most beautiful way to live. It gives me something healthy, positive, and worthy to pour my energy into.
For years, I lived under the influence and made terrible decisions that not only caused shame and embarrassment but also eroded my self-confidence, self-love, self-respect, and self-worth. My goal now is to help shift the conversation in our communities toward sobriety—especially for our younger generations, some of whom may one day face the struggles of addiction.
I want to embed the idea of sobriety, and everything it brings, into the minds of both young people and adults.
My hope is that, for some, sobriety will become their lantern too—especially for those who may fall into addiction.
It is time to add to the narrative of addiction.
While conversations about addiction are critical and necessary, I firmly believe that placing sobriety at the forefront will have a powerful and positive impact on our communities. Too often, we focus on what is broken, damaged, or negative. We forget to highlight and celebrate what is good, healthy, and hopeful.
Soberkern Inc. is made with pure and genuine intention, it is mine to share because my only hope is to help change the conversation to hopefully impact someone to choose sobriety.
I admit that launching my own nonprofit is intimidating, but it is also incredibly exciting. I did not create Soberkern to only make a profit. I created it to gift myself something beautiful, meaningful, and worthy beyond my profession/work life — and to offer that to others as well.
